EnvironmenT

A strategy that starts with a deep respect for the environment

To build a greener world, Holcim is taking proactive steps to limit the environmental impact of its operations. Our policies are centered around reducing air emissions, managing our water consumption, limiting our waste wherever possible, and reducing CO2 emissions from electrical consumption.

What environmental progress has Holcim made?

18% reduction in dust emissions

per metric ton of clinker in 2021 versus 2020

7% reduction in NOx emissions

per metric ton of clinker in 2021 versus 2020

99% of total electricity consumption assessed

ongoing projects for optimization and greener sourcing

Air emissions

All Holcim sites are required to measure and manage air emissions resulting from cement production. The vast majority of Holcim plants operate within best practice emission ranges, and some are among the best in the sector.

Globally, we are completing the installation of the Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) to facilitate real-time emissions monitoring of any kiln stack in the world.

Water management

Holcim considers the total impact of our operations on water resources in the communities where we operate, particularly in water-risk areas.

We take strategic action to reduce the use of freshwater within our operations, as well as the risk of water depletion or pollution. We do this by measuring our operational water footprint, assessing water risks and increasing the recycling and reuse of process water. In addition, we engage with stakeholders on sharing water and provide freshwater replenishment to water-risk communities.

Waste reduction

As one of the world’s largest recycling companies, Holcim is committed to driving the circular economy and preserving nature. We recycled 54 million metric tons of waste in 2021 and are on our way to 100 million metric tons by 2030.

While our internal waste was less than 2% of the external waste we recycled in 2021, we remain committed to reducing the amount of disposed waste, through best practices in reuse, recycling and sustainable procurement.

Electricity consumption

To minimize the environmental impact of our operations, we’re optimizing electricity consumption. In 2022, we assessed 99% of our global electricity usage, and projects are ongoing that will convert opportunities into real energy savings.

We also kicked off the global energy Treasure Hunt. Thousands of workers with different professional profiles have taken part, reporting more than 9,000 opportunities to save energy.

The backbone of our initiative to reduce consumption is greener energy sourcing, optimized process planning, and more efficient use of equipment and utilities.
